Watch out for Magpies, says Wollongong Council
Wollongong City Council is reminding residents to take extra caution during Magpie swooping season. While magpies are generally not aggressive for most of the year, they become particularly protective of their territory during nesting season.
During this time, if anyone walks or rides past their nesting area, they may perceive them as invaders and swoop at them while clacking their bills. Although this behavior can be intimidating, it is usually just a warning.
Magpies are protected throughout NSW, and if you encounter a particularly menacing magpie, you can report it to Wollongong City Council by calling (02) 4227 7111. The council will then install warning signage in the area to notify passers-by of the potential for swooping.
